SpeedDater is an online speed dating company who organise single events in the UK, the company was originally founded by Simon Prockter and Ben Tisdall in September 2002, and they quickly established Speed Dater as the market leader in this sector.

Speed dating is a more formalised match making process where those taking part try and meet as many new people as they can in a limited time and from those people they rate who they find most compatible. The origins of speed dating are credited to Rabbi Yaakov of Aish HaTorah, it was originally a way to help single Jewish people to meet and marry.

SpeedDater is built on the success of speed dating the first speed dating event took place at Peets Cafe in Beverly Hills in 1998 and soon grew success across the United States. The popularity of speed dating was boosted by its feature in TV shows such as Sex and the City and soon took off across the globe.

SpeedDater has proved a huge success here in the UK and the company run speed dating in over 40 cities across the UK, in 2004 they launched their successful online dating site www.SpeedDateronline.co.uk. The company had also been successfully running holidays under the brand, so in 2005 they then launched another new site, www.SpeedBreaks.co.uk.

In March 2008 SpeedDater Events and SpeedDater Online were acquired by Cupid plc. Speedbreaks now operates as a separate business.

Some of the other events also include Lock and Key parties where when you arrive at the party women will be given a lock and the men will be given a key. Then you can start circulating looking for the person who matches your lock, or key.
